Neil Young & Crazy Horse did what they have always done best on Thursday night (11/29) at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philly. They stood up on stage in front of their giant amps and made the music live up to the size and scope of those oversized props! Neil Young, recently turned 67, was masterful as the singer, guitar player and band leader in a 14 song audio onslaught that sonically resembled the days of yore for Crazy Horse fans.
Some in attendance didn't seem to grasp the 16-plus minute version of "Walk Like A Giant" from Psychedelic Pill, their latest album, and Neil's 35th, but it was f*cking brilliant, as was most of the set. One thing remarkable about this show is also something simple and unique that started it off. As Neil and the band, and their "technical support crew" took the stage, they stood in a semi-circle and sang the national anthem, as Old Glory was unfurled behind them. I've seen thousands of shows, and have never seen that before. All I could do was shout, "Play ball!" at the end of it.
And play they did...wow! Here's the setlist:
Love and Only Love
Powderfinger
Born In Ontario
Walk Like A Giant
The Needle & The Damage Done
Twisted Road
Singer Without A Song
Ramada Inn
Cinnamon Girl
F*ckin’ Up
Mr. Soul
Out of The Blue
ENCORE:
Like A Hurricane
As Neil strolled the stage, moving from instrument to instrument, at one point during "Singer Without A Song," it felt like Neil at home, at the piano. Except in this case, the living room held 15,000 devotees of the man. That's how intimate that Young made the big joint feel last night. And there's more...
