Record Store Day will be on Saturday, April 16th.  This will be the 5th year for this special day to put more than 700 independent record stores in the spotlight, many of which claim that vinyl comprises more than 50% of their sales.  While CD sales have been decreasing in recent years, vinyl has been growing by leaps and bounds.  Many artists are releasing new albums on the web for downloads, on CD, and on vinyl.  Many are also re-releasing individual albums and/or entire catalogues on vinyl.  There are even 100 Best Buy stores that have brought back small sections of vinyl you can really browse through.  They, along with Amazon.com, also offer more than 15,000 vinyl titles on their website.  According to SoundScan, vinyl was the fastest-growing musical format last year, selling more units than any year since 1991.
Many artists are releasing special vinyl units to help in the Record Store Day celebration, all of which will only be available at participating independent stores.  The vast majority of these will be previously unreleased material or familiar music in a unique configuration or both. This includes a long list of Classic Rockers........   the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Derek & the Dominos, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Syd Barrett (of Pink Floyd), Nirvana, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Beach Boys, among others.
Check out this website for lots more about it and participating stores in the Philly area.
