IN THE POCKET ROCKIN!

Posted 5/14/2013 12:40:00 PM

David Uosikkenen's IN THE POCKET project has become quite the musically historical undertaking. You know David as the drummer for The Hooters and you get some of those Hooter boys in this project as well. What is truly special about ITP is that it makes a direct connection between Philly music/musicians THEN and Philly musicians NOW. Mining the city's storied musical past, ITP has taken on songs by Robert Hazard, The Nazz (Todd Rundgren's band from back in the day), Soul Survivors, The A's, The Dovells, The Trammps and many others and re-recorded them with an all star Philly cast of players. Many of the bands that packed the Cabarets and Dobbs back in the day (and still!) are featured in this project and will be part of the official CD release party happening at 23 East (yep!) on Friday May 31. Tickets are $20 in advance/$25 at the door ...

THE HOOTERS ROCK THE ELECTRIC FACTORY!

Posted 4/12/2013 12:43:00 PM

They’re calling it the 33 1/3 Show and with good reason. It’s a clever pun on the LP and it’s also been that long since they first played out together as a band. It was a little spot in Levittown called Matti’s Place where Philadelphia music history was launched. They called themselves The Hooters after the distinct melodica that permeated their music and they combined a thrilling mix of ska and reggae and pop. And they’ve been doing it since those heady days of the 80’s and now return with a rare hometown show.

They all still live locally and work in various musical endeavors but it’s not often that Philly gets a fullblown Hooters show. They often spend the summers touring Germany and other far flung countries where they headline arenas. And now, they celebrate their longevity with a show at The Electric Factory on Saturday April ...

ALL IN THE ASPERGER'S FAMILY

Posted 3/26/2013 1:05:00 PM

John Elder Robison is a man with Asperger's Syndrome. He has lived an incredibly interesting life (he worked with a lot of rock bands as an electronics/audio whiz among other occupations). In fact, he documents his upbringing (if you want to call it that) in his book LOOK ME IN THE EYE. As the brother of author Augusten Burroughs, their family life was also portrayed in the book/movie RUNNING WITH SCISSORS. Robison's third book RAISING CUBBY is the story of an Aspergian dad raising his Aspergian son. Listen to my chat with John then buy the book!
