The Best Concerts of The Summer
Posted 8/30/2013 12:49:00 AM

With summer drawing to a close, talk around the station centered around the following question….'What were the best concerts that came to the Philadelphia area this summer'?

Here’s what we came up with in no particular order.  Let us know what YOU think by commenting below.

YESTIVAL - AUGUST 3 AT SUSQUEHANNA BANK CENTER
Yes brought their first ever, Yestival, a multi-band festival celebrating progressive rock, to Susquehanna Bank Center on 8/3. The lineup featured YES, performing 2 classic albums in full quadraphonic sound (“The Yes Album” & “Close To The Edge”)
plus special guests The Musical Box, Carl Palmer’s E.L.P. Legacy, Renaissance.

102.9 WMGK’S 12TH ANNUAL LET FREEDOM ROCK FEST -  JULY 3 AT SUSQUEHANNA BANK CENTER
Heart and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience blew the crowd away with intense sets. Here’s what MGK’s Debbi Calton thought of the show….
TOTALLY loved our Let Freedom Rock Fest. What an incredible time this year with the music of Led Zeppelin resounding over the river with Jason Bonham's Led Zep Experience and then their explosive LZ set with Heart. Ann Wilson wasn't feeling well but you would never know it as she and sister Ann rocked it like they were in their 20's. And it was a great farewell to our outgoing MGK Houseband The Sofa Kings.

BAD COMPANY & LYNYRD SKYNYRD – JULY 17 AT SUSQUEHANNA BANK CENTER
Bad Company & Lynyrd Skynyrd hit the road together to celebrate the fact that both bands have been rocking for 40 years. Both bands satisfied the crowd with set lists that were chock full of smash hits.

THE EAGLES - JULY 16 AT WELLS FARGO CENTER
The Eagles hit the road to celebrate the release of their documentary ‘History of the Eagles’. Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit played career spanning classics like, “Hotel California,” “New Kid In Town,” “Heartache Tonight” as well as songs from the band members’ solo catalogs.

THE ROLLING STONES - JUNE 18 AND JUNE 21 AT WELLS FARGO CENTER
The Rolling Stones' two nights in Philadelphia were clearly the staff favorite when it came to best concert(s) of the summer.

Man, there were some pretty incredible concerts that blew through town this summer, but The Rolling Stones had to be the best show of the year – MGK’s Andre Gardner

It’s going to take a long time for any band to beat this year’s Rolling Stones performances in Philadelphia. Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles did great shows as one would expect and I heard everyone raving about Sabbath, but I find it hard to believe anything will top those Stones shows for a while. The world was making jokes about their age and making comments that this tour was nothing more than a money grab. Well Mick and the boys are welcome to my money again if I could just see this tour one more time. I’ve seen 11 of their 13 tours and although I don’t think I could ever see a better Stones show than the one they did at the Tower Theater…this tour surely give it a run for its money - MGK’s John DeBella

The best concerts of the Summer for me were the much-anticipated shows by The Stones in June! The band delivered beyond what anyone else in rock n' roll can do at their age, and in some ways sounded the best that they have in a long time. The shows were expensive to be sure, but the performance was lively, energized and... (say it with me) FUN!!! I'll take two more nights like that any ole Summertime! – MGK’s Ray Koob
