Deep Purple has just raised the curtain on its new album, Now What?!, and we just want to say, ‘keep it up!’.
Overseen by veteran classic rock producer Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd) the 11-track album’s diversity of sound, ranging from the harmonious chords of the reverent “All the Time in the World,” to the high-tempo, riff-heavy “Hell to Pay,” testifies to the notion that the British rockers have come a ways since bestowing “Smoke on the Water” on novice guitarists everywhere. Don’t let the new sound fool you, though; the band is following the same garage band philosophy they always have.
Vocalist Ian Gillan told NoiseCreep in a recent interview, ”The band turns up a rehearsal with no songs; that's always been now we are. We just jam and by about the third or fourth day, we start to have ideas for songs and start developing from there. Back then and today, just like that.”
Gillan adds that Ezrin’s influence on the album’s sound execution was key.
“Generally, I've always been slightly disappointed in sound and this new album wipes away everything we've ever done ever,” Gillan revealed to NoiseCreep. "I'm thrilled and delighted with what Bob was able to do. The first monitor mixes I ever heard from these sessions I just sat back and said 'oh my God, what he has done it's perfect.' Everything was so clearly defined from the guitars to the Hammond organ.”
With a solid regimen of material, the group is taking the music of Now What?! on the European road with 9 shows starting in Bulgaria on June 2 and ending in Sweden on August 10.
We were also hoping that they’d take the next ferry over to North America, but until then, you can get your hands on the new album, which will also be available on vinyl, on April 20.
