As if Billy Joel’s mantel didn’t already have enough awards, now the Piano Man will have to make room for another honor!
Per his official website, Joel has been announced by the Library of Congress as this year’s recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which recognizes those who have greatly contributed to the legacy of pop songwriting while also influencing generations of performers that follow.
Joel will be the sixth recipient of the Gershwin Prize, with past recipients including Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Hal David, Burt Bacharach and Carole King.
As far as company goes, that’s not half bad.
No word yet as to when Joel will be accepting the Gershwin Prize, but we’re sure he’ll find a way to pencil it in along with his Madison Square Garden residency dates, which are sold out through November.
