An unexpected extra from the upcoming Soundtrack of Summer Tour featuring Styx, Foreigner and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder is a new recording of the Eagles' "Hotel California," which the three acts recorded last week in Los Angeles and will be part of a special CD accompanying the tour.
Felder tells us that it was fascinating to revisit the legendary song he co-wrote back in the mid-70s:
"It was a challenge for me to sit down and rearrange that approach to the same song and have something that sound new and fresh. So it starts off real acoustic and light percussion halfway through, with the different singers coming on the verses. The vocals, man, I'll tell you, between Kelly (Hansen of Foreigner) and Tommy Shaw (of Styx) and myself singing on the choruses, it sounds jut, the vocals are spectacular... Then it gets halfway through and it starts getting a little more electric, and by the end we have...Foreigner's drummer playing and he comes in at the very end and starts playing live drums on it and it takes on a whole different personality. The (guitar) solos aren't exactly like the original; it's kind of, it's a different take to it. It's got a harder rock edge, so it goes form this really sweet, reggae-acoustic thing into this kind of rock ending on the end of it. So it's nice. It's a fun approach to it."
Foreigner's Mick Jones adds that doing "Hotel California" "was pretty interesting... It's a brilliant song. I think it's one of their best songs ever -- I think it may be THE best song. It's a great song. It's very simple but it's very...I think it really paints a picture, you know? It was a lot of fun playing it."
There's no word yet on a release date for the CD, which will also include individual songs from the three acts' catalogs.
The Soundtrack of Summer Tour gets under way May 16 in Oklahoma City.
