How do you select your first nailer? It depends on the task at hand. If you are finishing a basement then you may want to consider a kit that includes a framing nailer, finish nailer and maybe a brad nailer. If you are installing crown moulding then go with a 15g finish nailer. The bottom line, let your project dictate the nailer choice. The nailer choice will drive your air compressor choice (a future topic) -- selecting pneumatic nailers - Nailer Compressor Combo Kit

You can also listen to our older audio podcast on the subject of nailers here or watch a video of The Handyguys using a nail gun for target practice!

In this audio podcast The Handyguys discuss how to upgrade the entry doors in your house for increased security and then discuss a flowchart for determining if DIY projects are right for you.

Door Security

Door Devil Anti-Kick and Door Frame Repair KitThe Handyguys have discussed home security in the past but it usually involves systems that alert the homeowner or the police when there is a break-in. The device we talk about on this podcast designed to deter the bad guys from gaining entrance in the first place. The product is the Door Devil™ and Paul and Brian try it on for size!

Top 3 DIY upgrades recommended by Police

Adding a 2nd 2 cylinder Deadbolt

Adding a Peephole

Adding a door frame reinforcement device

In some areas break-ins are on the rise. Some people’s first reaction is to say “we need to get an alarm system”. Unfortunately many break-ins occur in houses that HAVE alarm systems. The thieves don’t care because they’d kick the door and run in/out in Blitzkrieg or NASCAR Pit crew style before the alarm company was even notified or police can respond. Thieves are in, out, and gone in 4 minutes or less. Certainly, the alarms provide incentive for them not to linger, but don’t provide the deterrent or defense necessary to protect the home.

The Handyguys are sick of snow. Is it time to purchase a new power tool?

If you live anywhere north of the Mason Dixon Line, you are probably fed up with the snow and ice that covers our sidewalks and driveways. For the handyguy budgeting for his or her next power tool, a snow blower may be on your mind. But is a snow blower really the next power tool you want to add to your tool arsenal? Evidently many folks around the country think so as the sales of snow blowers are on the rise according to Wendy Bounds of the Wall Street Journal. Paul enjoyed reading a pair of articles she wrote recently in his favorite newspaper. Wendy provides a review of several models and outlines the basic varieties of blowers.

Neither Brian nor Paul own a snow blower, and they are as overwhelmed as anyone by all the choices. Should a handyguy purchase a smaller electric shovel which may remove a few inches of snow, or would a two-stage godzilla model be the head turner that is desired? In order to sort this out, the Handyguys interview Wendy Bounds who has tested a small fleet of snow blowers for her WSJ review. As you will find out in this podcast, Bounds has plenty of driveway to give these machines a workout.

The Handyguys and Wendy discuss how the snow blower in every garage effects the very social fabric of our society. Do these machines put the squeeze on local neighborhood youth with an entrepreneurial spirit?

Listen to the Handyguys discussion Wendy Bounds from the Wall Street Journal
