They say that your short game is even more important than long, accurate drives. This weekend that proved to be even more true than usual at Doral. Had Phil Mickelson NOT chipped in on one of his many amazing “zero putts” over the weekend, or if young Nick Watney had gotten just another rotation or two on his birdie attempt on the final hole, there would have been a playoff, and who knows what happens next. Phil was the Master Chipper though, made some key putts after bad shots (only 33rd in the field for Greens In regulation), finishing #2 in putting for the tournament, and won.
As for Tiger Woods, he struggled again, finished tied for 9th, and walked away with $142k in prize money. Not bad cash, eh?
As big as the weekend was for Mickelson, the win, and Woods’ finish pulls him about as close as he has been in a long time to being the #1 ranked golfer in the world. Something tells me, TW won’t let that happen, and if it does, he won’t let it last for too long.
Despite not having time to get out myself this weekend, plans are gelling for my trip to Ocean City, Maryland for some spring golf action. Visit their web site to plan your getaway, and enter to win a trip for 4 for the next ten years by clicking here.
