The most famous athlete in the world returned to action this week, as Tiger Woods played his first event since his knee surgery last year. The WGC Accenture Match Championship is an odd choice for Woods, but he can pretty much do whatever he wants. Hell, he can afford to BUY whatever he wants, including some small nations.
The golf world (over)focused on his Wednesday match with Aussie Brendan Johnson. Even El Tigre could not have expected a birdie, eagle start on the first two holes, on his way to a 3 & 2 win in the first round. Johnson was no pushover though, running the world’s #1 ranked golfer to 16 holes, and scoring fairly well on several holes.
Then something (not so) funny (if you are the TV networks) happened: Tiger lost in the second round to Tim Clark 4 & 2, being outplayed by the South African ranked #33.
Woods admitted as much saying he couldn’t make enough birdies to beat the guy. Plain and simple, and let’s move along to Doral, which is TW’s probably next appearance this season. When asked where he goes from here, he quipped, “The airport.”
The loss of all four #1 seeds in the brackets leaves the weekend wide open for Ogilvy, Villegas and Mickelson, who are the only surviving Top 3 seeds from 4 brackets. I’d give Cink, Els and Leonard a decent shot, too. Hell, with woods out of the mix, it’s anybody’s game on the weekend!
