The weather can’t make up its mind about whether the ground hog saw his shadow or not. Warm ups only make the golf fan react like so many other hibernating creatures. We come out, and start to enjoy the warm sunshine and then…BAM!!! It’s 24 degrees, cold, snowy and windy…real BOOKYUCK weather, as DeBella calls it. The wind in the last 24 hours would blow even the heartiest drive right off the course.
The one sure way to know that spring and golf weather are on the way is the start of the PGA season. After they take their obligatory trip to Hawaii (rough gig, right?), the tour starts up in the desert and on the coastline courses of the western states. The annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am is always a fun event for golf viewers. George Lopez is not only funnier than David Feherty, he is a pretty good golfer, too! Not only are the players knocking off the rust, but the amateurs make it fun, and it’s way less serious than the remainder of the PGA Tour schedule.
This season, the big question has been, when will Tiger return? And as I am writing this, we get our answer: The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson next weekend!!! How’d you like to be the poor bastard drawing TW in the first couple rounds?
I think most golf fans were amazed to hear Woods saying he was feeling good, after his surgical recovery period, because he no longer felt bones doing things that bones shouldn’t do, on every swing. It is living legend type stuff that he won last year’s U.S. Open on one leg. The next question, how good will be when he can use both legs? The early answer is, “Look out, because he will be even better!” Is that even possible? Apparently, being unable to take full swings pushed Tiger to take his short game to a whole new level. Kinda like beating every level on Halo only to find out there’s more.
They say life sometimes comes together in ways we don’t expect. The birth of Tiger’s son, Charlie Axel, his second child, came during his recovery, so that he was able to spend more time with the family. But soon, he will leave the house, and go play every day. He may look back at his down time, and actually miss it. That’s what happens when you have all the money you’ll ever need, and you have to go to work on road. You miss those little bundles of joy.
As for me, I got two rounds in this winter. The rust is bad, but can be knocked off, and pursuit of a better game can begin…again. Soon, duffers, soon…
