Championship Sunday in the NFL is on the horizon, and somehow our boys, those wild and hairy Philadelphia Football Eagles, are still playing. While the Cowgirls, Giants, Bucs, Vikes, Bears, Panthers, and the rest are playing football on their Wii or X-Box, these ragtag, rough and ready muthas from Broad and Pattison have survived the onslaught of the playoffs, the uneasy love of their fans, the swirling cold of Giants Stadium, and even their own inconsistency, to emerge as one half of the NFC Championship game for the 2008 season.
Like pulling teeth? Hell yeah, like pulling hippo chicklets or elephant tusks.
There has been much talk of a certain slice of the media needing to eat some crow (including me) over assessments offered regarding Andy Reid's coaching this season. And I just wanna go on record as saying, WE WERE RIGHT. For Ray Diddinger, Mikey Miss, and a half dozen others...WE WERE RIGHT!
Once Andy saw the light, stuck with the run (even when it yielded 1-2-3 yards a pop in the last 2 games) and balanced the Birds offensive attack, they have been unbeatable! Oh yeah, the one loss in the last few weeks? It was against the Dedskins, when Andy abandoned this balanced gameplan.
With a focused run AND pass attack, this Eagles team is one of the NFL's best AND most consistent squads. Without that it is a weekly headache for millions of us.
This has been the difference as a stunningly stingy defense (4th & 1, anyone? Eli? Brandon?) and a resurgent special teams squad, added to this offensive thing goin' on has propelled the Birds to one step short of a Super Bowl return. Just in time, too, for many of this team's veteran stalwarts.
I'll post my pre-game position and predictions later in the week, but let's get green and hairy and support our boys.
I have vowed to keep the razor away from my already fuzzin' up face 'til the deed is done.
Solidarity!!!
