I've finally calmed down after one of the most exciting and satisfying days in my almost 32-year radio career.

As many of you know, last Friday 102.9 MGK went "All Beatles" to celebrate the fact that The Beatles were voted the #1 Classic Rock Artists Of All Time by our MGK At-Work Network members.

As the day drew near, I got increasingly excited about the fact that I'd get to play solid Beatles for five straight hours. Even with my excitement at a fever pitch as Friday finally arrived, and the fact we had talked it up for a week leading up to the event, I wasn't prepared for the reaction of our listeners.

I knew that The Beatles faithful, many of whom listen to my Sunday Breakfast With The Beatles from 7-9am on MGK, would be excited, but I could not believe the outpouring of positive comments through phone calls, e-mails, texts, Facebook postings and in-person visits to the studio.  Never, during my time at MGK, have I received so many e-mails in one afternoon.  In fact, the e-mails are still coming in!

In reading the emails, talking with our listeners on the phone and communicating with them through social networks, it became clear to me exactly what effect our All-Beatles day had on our audience.

It made people happy.

Even with all the daily pressures and demands put on our lives, for one day it all seemed easier to deal with everything.  The songs of Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starr served as the backdrop to our day, and as the songs played we started to remember the memories those songs evoked.

One MGK listener wrote to me that "it's taking me back to a more innocent time when I didn't worry about things so much."  On Friday, he didn't worry so much.  The Beatles' music and their messages of love enlightened him and brightened his day.

Sitting (and sometimes standing and dancing) in the MGK air studio that day, I remembered the amazingly magical and powerful effect music has on people.  For our listeners, it was the music of The Beatles which sent wonderful waves of good feelings and love around the Delaware Valley and, as many of our e-mails confirm, the world.

What an incredible honor and thrill it was for me to be a part of that.

"I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.'"
Kurt Vonnegut

"I declare that The Beatles are mutants. Prototypes of evolutionary agents sent by God, endowed with a mysterious power to create a new human species, a young race of laughing freemen."
Timothy Leary
